Ottl 0-1

Podolski 0-2

Podoslki 0-3

Tararache 1-3

Daun 2-3

Podolski sends Duisburg into Second Division

MSV Duisburg are to return to the second division after just one year after going down to a 3-2 home defeat to newly crowned champions Bayern Munich.

Bayern were deserved winners at the MSV Arena but made life difficult for themselves in the second half by conceding twice. The Bavarians took the lead after just three minutes through Andreas Ottl before Lukas Podolski added two more in the opening 20 minutes.

Tararache pulled one back for Duisburg early in the second half, while a comical goal on 54 minutes gave the home side hope of a point. Alas it wasn’t to be for the plucky Zebras.

First Half

Bayern made a blitz start in very sunny conditions with Andreas Ottl firing the visitors ahead after just three minutes. Tararache cleared a Schweinsteiger cross straight to the midfielder, who took a few steps before firing past Starke from 25 meters.

Shortly after, MSV had a huge chance of their own. Tararache exchanged passes with Maicon and found himself all alone inside the Bayern penalty area. He delayed for too long however and Willy Sagnol got back to clear the danger.

The Bavarians were sitting deep and allowing Duisburg to dictate the game, but the home side were unable to create that many clear chances.

Bayern on the other hand started to become more dangerous and on 18 minutes Mark van Bommel was allowed far too much time and space down the right hand side. The Dutchman crossed unhindered into the middle where Podolski was completely unmarked and headed easily in for the second Bayern goal.

There was no let up from Hitzfeld’s troops and they added a third two minutes later. Keeper Tom Starke was only able to parry a Sosa shot, but the ball fell to Podolski, who had the easiest of chances to fire home into the empty net.

The visitors were in full control and took the opportunity to relax a little and try to hit Duisburg on the counter attack. A 3-0 first half lead was more than justified after a fine display in the first 45 minutes.

Second Half

The second half began just like the first with a quick goal. Tararache was not dealt with by Ottl as he got forward and his shot from 22 meters flew into the left hand corner of Kahn’s goal to give the home side a glimmer of hope.

Three minutes later and it was very nearly 3-2 with Daun bearing down into the penalty area, but he was only able to hit the side netting after beating Martin Demichelis.

The game continued to go back and forth and a highly eventful few minutes culminated in a second Duisburg goal. Tom Starke was twice called upon to rescue the home side producing saves from both Podolski and Schlaudraff.

The Zebras then broke up field and Martin Demichelis fired the ball against the knee of Daun, only for the ball to deflect back into the Bayern goal for a quite curious goal.

The game was being played at a very high tempo with both sides going all out for attack. The midfield was being largely by-passed but Bayern in particular started to lose the ball cheaply.

Whenever Bayern did move up a gear or two, MSV keeper Starke was on hand to save the day. He saved from Schweinsteiger on 74 minutes and then denied Podolski seconds later.

However in the 82nd minute the Duisburg keeper was left helpless with Toni Kroos creating a great chance for Podolski after cutting the ball back from the bye-line. The German international shot wide from close range to keep the score at 3-2.

Three minutes later and the best chance of the game was wasted by Sosa as the Argentinian fired wide from close range with the goal at his mercy.
